Department of Biosciences and Sericulture

The Department of Sericulture was established in the year 1983 as one of the inception departments of Sri Padmavati Mahila Visvavidyalayam, Tirupati. To start with, the department offered Post-Graduate Diploma in sericulture until the academic year 1994 to 1995. Subsequently, during the academic year 1987-1989 Post Graduate degree in Sericulture (M.Sc. Sericulture) was introduced. As the demand for basic sciences had been gradually increased, two basic courses such as M.Sc. Zoology and M.Sc. Botany were launched during the academic years 2003-2004 and 2008-2009 respectively.

The Department established with a mission
  • To empower the women students with self- reliance
  • To impart need based quality education and
  • To enhance the professional and life skills, competitiveness and employability of the students

The Department offers 3 P.G programmes and research programmes.

Research Programmes

The department is actively involved in the Research Programmes on various thrust areas. The department had extended its research horizons in widening and diversifying the research expertise through collaborative research programmes with National and International research Institutes and Universities,in order to create wider opportunities for the scholars to reach out to the trends in the advanced research and placements too. Good research infrastructural facilities are available to carry out the research.

The department has generated research grants to the tune of around Rs.250.00 lakhs from various funding bodies like DBT, DST, ICSSR, UGC DSIR, Non-SAP and FIST, APCOST and Prathista Industries. Filed for 6 patents and one patent has been published.

The following Research Programmes are offered by the Department on Full-time and Part-time basis in accordance to the UGC guidelines.
